Settlements such as Lambityeco in Oaxaca suffered a depopulation around 800 AD and although a small population remained, they built no more temples or monumental buildings.
Other Ruin sites in Southern Mexico show a similar pattern of depopulation according to researchers.

Researchers still debate the cause of the decline of cities.

An extended drought seems to be the reason favored by most.

A drought could have brought on a depopulation an inability to maintain the cities.
