In the middle of the 1100s,  the Pont d'St. Benzet (bridge) was built over the Rhone at Avignon.   During the 14th century reign of Popes in Avignon, church leaders built sumptuous homes in the fortified city of Avignon where the Palace of the Popes was the center of the city and ramparts led out of the city to this bridge over the Rhone River.
Provence Villages near Apt and Saignon, The villages east of Avignon and Gordes, grow grapes, olives and lavender while the intense olive oil production is 25-35 miles to the south around Les Baux de Provence, Arles , and Mouries.
Travel To Avignon's Palace of the Popes, Provence
Provence is an agricultural area of Southern France that includes the city of Montelimar in the north to the Mediterranean city of Marseilles in the south.  The seaside town of Nice is the southeastern border while the RhoneRiver makes up  the western border.  Avignon is located on the Rhone River fifty miles north of the Rhone River Delta.

From Paris, fast TGV trains Leave Gare Lyon (Station) and reach Avignon in two and a half hours.
  • Rental Cars
Avignon is one of the principle cities of Provence and offers a TGV train station with rental cars at the station.  Bus service reaches the city of Avignon from the station.  There is a tourist information booth just outside the station.

Day Trips From Avignon
  • Arles is another major city in Provence.  Arles is 23 miles south of
Avignon. and offers TGV (Train Grand Vitesse)  service at the nearby city of Nimes where there is also an airport.  
Marseilles is south of Avignon.  Marseilles offers a large airport north of the city with surface transportation to all areas of Provence including bus service to Avignon. High-speed roads reach |Marseilles from Paris and Avignon
Cassis and the coastal area east of Marseilles can be reached by the D-7 high speed road south of Avignon or by TGV train and Air service to Marseilles.
Provence  tomato and eggplant come ripe to the markets in June.   Provence dessert recipes in June: fresh cherries, apricots, and Provence goat cheese topped off with a bottle of Cotes du Rhone.
Good Provence Cuisine  based on tomatoes, olive oil, rosemary, thyme, and the in-season fruits and vegetables along with seafood from the Mediteranean and Atlantic coasts is offered by the restaurants in Avignon, this one in the plaza below the Palace of the Popes

Avignon's  Agricultural surroundings produce wine and lavender. Cavallion to the south is noted for melons and the village of Lisle sur Sorgue to the souteast is famous for its antique festival.  
The Luberon Valey and Alpilles Hills offer hiking and bikinging.
The Palace of the Popes was built during the 1300s in Avignon, Provence.  Reach Avignon in less than 3 hours from Paris by high-speed train.
Do You need an International Driving Permit to Drive in Europe.

Speed limits will be clearly marked and the Rotary will be a welcome site with its directions to towns.  Gassing up is similar to US with credit card and automatic shut-off at modern pumps. Car rental are available in all large cities and at many TGV Train Stations..
