Remnants of the 1825 Erie Canal, the first of three
versions, offer historic sites and old towpaths where
mules once pulled the boats and now bikers ride

Getting to the Erie Canal: The nearest large city with an international airport is either Buffalo or Albany,
each at opposite ends of the canal. Air service reaches both airports from hubs such as NY City
,Boston, or Philadelphia. Rental cars are available at the airports in Buffalo and Albany. From Albany
