Cape Cod History, Sandwich, Museum Town

During the 1850s the village of Sandwich changed from a farming community to a manufacturing community with the establishment of the Sandwich Glass Factory just across the street from the grist mill.
Now a
museum and gift shop, the former glass works offers glass making demonstrations that show how the mill prospered by using metal molds to mass produce high quality glass.

By 1850 the plant employed 500 workers who made glassware from silica brought in from New York and made glassware available to everyone not just the wealthy. The plant thrived until the 1880s when they switched to
high quality blown glass in order to compete.  By  1890, however,  changing conditions forced an end to production leaving the factory abandoned.

The
Sandwich Historical Society bought the site in 1907 and assembled a collection in 14 display galleries where they exhibit over 5,000 examples of prized Sandwich glass along with ovens for glass blowing demonstrations and educational displays of the additives that go into making colorful and durable glass.
Sandwich also celebrates the life of resident
Thornton Burgess, 1874-1965, the author of the Peter Rabbit stories. Visitors can see what inspired some of the 170 books written by Burgess by touring the nearby 19th Century jam making exhibit and trails of the Green Briar Nature Center.
