Cinque Terre Italy
Five Lands For Hiking

The Connections to the Villages Rail. Boat, Hiking Trails

The connection to the outside world, the railway which weaves in and out of tunnels along the coast, can offer a means to reach each village.
You can also use the boats that shuttle between villages when the sun gets low and Each village has its own character, Although now they are only a few minutes apart by train and the passenger ferry that makes frequent trips during the day, these villages were once isolated by the steep cliffs which are now terraced intensively.  The cliffs have a network of trails over the terraces  making a great place for hikers..
In the Five Lands, the five small fishing villages carved out of the rocky hillsides a thousand years ago or more, the locals fish the Bay of Ligeria and tend grape vines and olive trees on the terraced hills .
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mar  provide lodging in one of the best preserved natural areas of the Mediterranean, now a natural park and preserve.

Cinque Terre Walking, Hiking Trails through the Five Lands

You can rent a B&B in Cinque Terre

and spend your days walking through the grape orchards and olive groves on trails that connect the five villages. From trails high above the Mediterranean Sea you can look down on the village and the coves by the sea.
Your  first day of hiking could start on the Via del' Amore in Riomaggiore a trail that leads out along the shore to the next village, Manarola. From this trail a dozen little trails lead to outcrops where sunbathers find some privacy and fishermen find shelter in storms.

Cinque Terre, Nature Park  for Hiking On Trails Between Villages

The villages are now part of a nature park.  The Park preserves the environment and the air quality by operating a shuttle between villages. If the hiking gets too much, the shuttle is a good option. Walking is the ideal way to get around

You can book a B&B in Riomaggiore, the first Cinque Terre Village you encounter driving north  from La Spezia.
There is just one pedestrian only street leading down to the sea.
some B&Bs offer parking in a garage if you have a rental car.
Brightly-painted houses of the medieval village lean into one another in a disarray of pastel cobbles with networks of small streets and sheltered paths.
Once you settle in you can walk down the hill towards the cove and then hike the trail leading out along the shore to the next village, Manarola.
Monterosso al Mare is another village that offers plentiful lodging.  It is at the northern end of the park and offers a swimming beach

These villages date back to the twelfth century.  Manarola is only a half hour walk from Riomaggiore.  Volastra is above the villages and offers great views of the coast from the top of the terraced hills.

Corniglia,  a half-hour hike from Manarola heading north, occupies a formidable rock promontory jutting from the sea with two small beaches at its sides.  You can reach Corniglia by walking from Manarola or from the railway stop and then up a long flight of steps.
Vernaza, the fourth village heading north has sheltered cove and several restaurants near the sea.

From Vernazza it is a two hour hike to the next village Monterosso al Mar.  You can take  the ferry that shuttles between the villages.  Vernazza's harbor once sheltered a Roman installation
Monterosso al Mare is the last northerly village. It has a sandy beach and a boat dock where the water taxis connect to the other villages.
