An Erie Canal vacation can provide daily recreation on the Canal Towpaths and Rail Lines which have been Take an Inn to Inn Vacation on Erie Canal bicycle trails from Albany To Buffalo.
Remnants of the 1825 Erie Canal, the first of three versions, offers historic sites and old towpaths where mules once pulled the boats.
The canal was first proposed by a flour merchant near buffalo and then championed by Governor of New York, Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. This engineering marvel was called at times Clinton's Folly but proved to be a boon to New York City, making it the financial capitol of the world. The Canal once touted as the Eighth Wonder of the World has seen two rebuilding phases since the first project. As boats grew larger and steam power came in, the towpaths along the old course fell to disuse.
Railroads built track along the canal and then as that mode of transport gave way to airplanes and trucking, the flat and wide mule track and rail beds became bike and walking paths.
Many towns along the way have museums to canal history as each town  along the canal takes pride in the part it played in building the canal.
If you pack bikes, you can ride dozens of trails beside the canal.  Some of the trails are downtown center of a canal-side village.
At times the trail runs on a wide path set aside along the highway that parallels the canal. This network of bike and walking trails connects Albany, New York to Buffalo, New York,  a distance of 360 miles or so.
Most trails are part of the
Erie Canalway Trail, an off-road trail that follows the Erie Canal for much of its length.
Other sections of trail are on a wide path along the paved  highway, Route 31  in the west section of the Erie Canal and Routes 5s and 5 in the east section.
These highway trails are part of
New York State Bicycle Route 5, and as such they offer a wide bike path on one side of the highway.  The highway trails follow the Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo..
