The area has for thousands of years produced olive oil and wine and was once an important region to the Romans for grain, olives and wine.
The Romans built an aqueduct from the north near Eygalieres that supplied water to a grain mill near Arles. At 43.704988,4.721546, where the D33 south of Fontvieille crosses the D82, you walk along remnants of the aqueduct that fed water to the mill at Barbegal.

Ancient church buildings built above the vineyards and groves around Eygalieres will color the hikes and bike rides.
From Eygalieres, good roads lead to trails through the Alpilles and to the Luberon and Vaucluse hills and valleys east of Avignon.
The flat grasslands of the Camargue are not far to the south where you find spectacular scenery and the historic towns of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Aigues Mortes.
