Paris RER Train Transportation connects to the Metro and TGV trains stations at several stations in Paris and serves within Paris and to the outlying suburbs.

RER Trains and Lines

The RER Trains are a Paris rapid transit system with five lines that are lettered A through E and color coded.  The trains connect to the Paris Metropolitain/Subway at several Paris stations.
  • RER Service Airport CDG
The RER blue train line is handy way to reach CDG Airport.  Other trains reach the Palace of Versailles, Monet's Garden, and many other outlying sites.  Line B  (blue)n for example runs north and south and connects to CDG Airport from the Gare de Nord. (Train Station)
  • RER Palace of Versailles
Reach the Palace of Versailles on the RER  Train line, C-5.  This train serves from the center of Paris at several stations including Gare d'Austerlitz and Notre Dame.
Leave the train at the Versailles Rive Gauge Station and walk to the grounds of the Palace.

RER Trains serve stations that also serve the TGV Trains and the conventional trains.  Several  Metro Stations have a connection to the RER  lines.

The RER lines are lettered A through E while the Metro lines are numbered .  

Train Tickets

The RER and Metro tickets are valid for both systems and you can make connections between the two systems at various stations.  The station below the Arc de Triumph for example. (Charles de Gaulle/Etoile Station) offers three Metro lines and one RER with stairways connecting the lines
  • RER Color Coded and Lettered
RER lines are color coded on maps like the Metro so you must be careful not to confuse the two systems. RER Trains are lettered A through E
  • RER For Longer Distances
The RER trains serve the inner city but are faster than the Metro, making fewer stops.  The RER trains are the best way to go longer distances or to sites outside the city.  
The RER is are color coded and lettered A through E.  The Metro lines are also color coded but numbered 1 through 14.  
The RER and Metro Ticket are the same
Look for the maps that show both the RER and the metro in the Paris stations.
The RER trains and the Metro trains serve several Paris stations where you can transfer between the two systems.

  • Spring
March, April, May, and June are good times to go to Paris for walking the city, museum visits, biking outlying regions, and the culinary vacation.  The weather in Paris is temperate from March to May  (50-75 F) and the city will not be too crowded.  
  • Summer
July and August are high season and the time when many Paris shops close for vacation.  Accommodations could be scarce in June July August.  some restaurants and shops close the month of August.  
  • Fall
Weather is good in September October, great months to visit Paris.  
Showers could come in any month but will be of short duration.  Snow is rare
