Spearfish SD, Camping In South Dakota for Hiking Biking, and Camping
Entering at the town of Spearfish from Route I-90, the east coast to west coast interstate highway, you find Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, Route 14-A, (Route 14 on some maps) just east of the town.
Enter route 222 at Savoy near Spearfish Falls and find the campgrounds. Sites are $15 a night, self-pay envelope $7.50 for Golden Age Pass holders. No hookups, no dump station.
Tent and RV camping is available at Rod and Gun for $15 per night, $7.50 with Golden Age Pass. This is National Forest land. Self-pay envelopes, correct change advisable. The sites are small sites with no shade at the Rod and Gun camp.
Shade is available at the Timon Camp, about 2 miles away from the Rod and Gun Campground on the same Roughlock Falls road.
No dump stations available at these sites.
Enter at Savoy for the Roughlock Falls road and go three miles to the Rod and Gun Campground, or two more miles to the Timon sites. Pick an unoccupied site, pay at the kiosk, and clip your receipt to the post.
Other campgrounds are available at Spearfish, the large Spearfish City campground near the fish hatchery.
RV vacationers can use the park as a convenient stopover on the way west or east on route I-90; the park's Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway eventually comes to the town of Lead and then Deadwood, towns near Mount Rushmore and stopovers for most east/west travelers. Bikers on the way to the first week in August rally at Sturgis ND occasionally make the park a stop on the way..
A vast network of gravel roads makes hiking and biking a great activity in the canyon. Hiking trails follow the Little Spearfish River along its course near Roughlock Falls and the two camp grounds, Rod and Gun and Timon.
These streams are stocked with brown and rainbow trout.

Camping Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish is in the southwest corner of South Dakota about 46 miles west of Rapid City and 65 miles from Mount Rushmore.
The rod and Gun Campground in Spearfish Canyon area offers some great views and camping and hiking . the site is on SD 220, the Roughlock Falls road, a dirt road in the Black Hills about ten miles from Lead/ Deadwood.
The area was once managed by the mining companies and now is a preserved landscape of pine forest and meadow with the Spearfish River running through it.
