Renting In Provence
Hiking in The South of France
Rent a House or Villa in Provence,
The advantage of renting a house, villa, or vacation
apartment for a Provence vacation are many.
You can study cooking Provencals and have your own
kitchen for trying the regional recipes. You can make
day hikes and bike trips through the farm country in the
hills and valleys where you can forage for wild spices.
You will also save money on the lodging fees and you
will have freedom to explore all that Provence offers.
Renting in a Provence village will put hiking and
biking trails within reach. The small villages are
connected by trails through the hills. They are
many, and often they connect the villages through
olive groves and vineyards. You might even
encounter shepherds on the trails.
Some hiking trails are well marked in the local
language, others are used mainly by the local
farmers.
With local inquiry or a map from the tourist office in
the village, you can hike through the narrow cobbled
streets of your village and then into the hills on
networks of trails through valleys to the neighboring
village.
You might arrive at the village on market day. If so
you will find fruits and vegetables fresh.
You can buy some low-fat crushed olive tapinades
spiced with basil, along with goat cheese and French
bread. Your trail might lead to a local vineyard for a
bottle of wine to complete a picnic lunch on the way
to the next village.
In the Luberon Mountains, the Alpiles, and
Vaucluse Plateau, the villages where you will find
lodging are usually no more than six to ten miles
apart
Check ahead, hiking may not be allowed in some areas
during July and August when forest fire danger is high.
This makes May, June, and the latter part of September

Provence Renting
Province was once part of Rome. It is mainly agricultural, growing lavender
cherries, apricots, and melons in the north and grapes and olives on the south.
The farms have produced a regional cuisine of Provence that has much to do
with the available produce in season. The farmers of Provence work the land and
cherish their traditions. Many of the villages hold festivals based on the spring
planting and fall harvest. Festivals include ancient music, dance, horsemanship,
bull fighting and traditional Provence meals based on olives, rice, grape and
roasted lamb.
